Forty-Two Terms and Definitions

<


Bid:
The "Bid" equals the number of points that a player thinks he and his partner can take in a hand. Bids vary from min. "30" to one mark "42", to multiple marks.
(Max. opening 1st bid is "84" or "Two Marks". Someone must have already bid "84" before a one mark increased bid can be made.) See Example:

Bones:
Dominos.

Count:
Dominos with face values equal to 5 or 10, Five/Blank , Four/Ace , Trey/Deuce , Six/Four , and the Double Five . Each count domino is worth its face value in points.

Cow:
The second highest domino in a suit.

Dime:
A ten count or point domino, the Six/Four or Double Five .

Double: A double has the same number on each end. The double is the highest rank in its suit.

Draw:
After the dominos are shuffled each player picks or draws seven dominos to begin play.
The shuffler draws last.

False Indicator: (See Indicate Below}
When your partner does not follow suit, the domino that he plays a "False Indicator" when he does not have the high domino in the suit he plays. See Example:

Follow Me:
When a player gets the bid and doesn't have one suit to call a trump suit, he can say "Follow Me", or "No Trump". This means the highest domino in the lead suit takes the trick . See Example:

Force Bid:
When the last bidder has to take the bid because the other three players passed for a min. "30". See "House Rules".

Hand:
(A) The seven tricks played after each shuffle
(B) The seven dominos held by each player.
Each player has a "Hand" of seven dominos to play a "Hand" of Forty-Two for the "Bid". "Hand" after "Hand" is played til there is a game winner.

Hefer:
The third highest domino in a suit.

Helping Hand:
A hand with doubles and/or game to help your partner make his bid.
Indicated by a "30" bid. Not all "30" bids are a "Helping Hand".

House Rules:
These are the established playing rules defined before play begins. High or low draw for the shuffle, Force bidding, Table Talk, Reneges, Sevens, Plunge, Nel-o.

Indicate:
When a player does not follow suit, he plays a domino whose high end indicates he has the high domino in that suit. See Example:

Lay Down:
This is a hand that can't be set. The bidder will take all the tricks. See Examples:

Lead:
The first domino played in each trick or hand. See "Opening"

Mark:
Each hand won or lost is a mark or marks that were bid. one mark equals one point in a game to sevn marks or points to win the game.

Nickel:
A five count or point domino, Five/Blank , Four/One , Three/ Deuces .

Offs:
Dominos in your hand that when lead out will be taken by another player. If not taken by your partner, the trick and any game played will be lost to the other team. There are good offs and bad offs.

Opening:
The first domino played in each trick or hand. See "Lead"

Over Trump:
When someone trumps in on a voided suit lead, and another player also void of the lead suit plays a higher trump and takes the trick.

Partner:
The other person on your team. He has seven dominos to help you make your bid or set the other team.

Pass:
If you're "Hand" can only make less than "30" points. You "Pass" and your "Hand" is used to help your partner or set the other team.

Points:
There are 42 points in a hand. Seven tricks plus the count dominos.

Pole:
"We Are On The Pole", "You Are On The Pole", "It's Pole To Pole", Pole = 6 Marks, One Or Both Teams Need 1 Mark To Win.

Pumping Up The Bid:
A non-makable bid intended to make an opposition partner bid higher. Bidding "31" after a "30" bid to make the other team "32" bid making it easier to set.
(In a game where I could not get the bid for "36", the next player bid "37". I bid "36" on a hand not worth "30". He bid "37" and I showed my hand after we set him on the second trick. Others were watching and chuckled. It turned the game.)

Renege:
When you don't follow suit when a domino is led, a Ace is led, you have a Ace, but you play something else. When a teamplayer reneges, the opposing team wins the bid.

Round Robin:
NO PARTNER NEEDED ! Different partners are randomly picked for each game. You play with a different partner each game, giving you the chance to win 1ST place all by your self.

Score:
The team who scores seven marks or points wins the game. By spelling "ALL".

Set:
When the bidding team does not make the bid, they are set, and the opposing team gets the bid.

Shake:
Shuffle.

Shuffle:
Randomizing the dominos.

Skunked:
If the losing team gets no marks or points.

Stack:
When the bid is one or more marks, the dominos in each trick are stacked so only the last one or two tricks show in single or double stacking. See " House Rules" See Examples:

Straight off:
A straight off is an domino whose numbers on either end does not match the other suits in your hand, the Four/Duece is the only Four and the only Duece in your hand. (See also Offs.)

Suit:
A suit is the seven dominos with the same number on one end the Five suit is Double Five , Five/Six , Five/Four , Five/Trey , Six/Duece , Five/Ace , Five/Blank ; Aces are Double Ace , Ace/Six , Ace/Five , Ace/Four , Ace/Trey , Ace/Duece , Trey/Blank , etc. See More:

Talk across the table:
Talking about the hand in play is not allowed. Chatting is fine.

Throw off:
Get rid of an unwanted domino when you can't follow suit in a trick. See More:

Trick:
Each play of a domino from each of the players is a "trick". There are seven tricks per hand of the game. Each trick taken is worth one point plus the value of any game in that trick. a trick with the Five/Blank is worth 6 points, a trick with the Six/Four is worth 11 points.

Trump:
The domino suit that outranks the other suits. Like "Hearts" or "Spades", The smallest "Trump" is larger tha a non trump double. See More:

Trump set:
When one of the opposition player has more or the same number (his trump the highest on third trick) trumps than you. When you do not make your bid, you are trump set. See More:

Two Trumping:
A hand in which the bidder has only two "Trump". You must have the two highest "Trump" and the Double Five.

If you get all the Aces "Trump" to come in, you try to get the rest of the game needed to make your bid.

Walker:
An "Off" domino that when lead is the high or only one of its suit when played. Example, if you lead the Ace/Blank , and all the other Aces have already been played, then the Ace/Blank is a "walker" and wins the trick.
